Yukon River Emergency Gillnet Closure - Coastal District & District 1 (ends July 3)

There is an emergency gillnet closure in effect for the Yukon River Coastal District & District 1. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) issued this emergency action due to critically low Chinook (king) salmon returns and concerns for conservation during the peak migration period.

Coastal District & District 1:

Effective: June 16, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. through July 3, 2026, at 8:00 p.m.

This closure applies to the area from the Naskonat Peninsula north to Point Romanof, including the Black River and the communities of Chevak, Hooper Bay, Scammon Bay, Emmonak, Nunam Iqua, Alakanuk, and Kotlik.

Restrictions for Coastal District & District 1 include:

  • All gillnets are prohibited and must be removed from the water. The closure applies to all users, including subsistence and non-subsistence fishers.

During the gillnet closure, fishermen may use selective gear such as, dip nets, beach seines, and hook and line gear for pink salmon, sockeye salmon, and nonsalmon species.
