Gill net fishing reopened for nonsalmon fishing using 4-inch or smaller mesh gill nets and manned fish wheels today, Thursday, July 24 at 12:00 p.m until Sunday, July 27 at 12:00 p.m. Weekly fishing with these methods will be open from Thursdays at noon through Sundays at noon.
During these weekend openings, gill nets must be operated in ways that avoid incidental harvest of salmon. If king, chum, or coho salmon are caught, fishers are encouraged to move their nets. Gill nets must be 4-inch or smaller mesh, a set net, no longer than 60 feet, and marked with a buoy or float displaying the fisher’s first initial, last name, and address. To help salmon reach the spawning grounds, all king, chum, and coho must be released alive, regardless of gear type. Pink and sockeye may be retained. Any salmon caught dead may be kept.
Fishing for nonsalmon with selective gear remains open 24/7, including during gill net closures. Selective gear includes: rod and pole, dip net, beach seine, hand line, long line, and fyke net.
Nonsalmon species include: burbot (lush), Dolly Varden, Bering Cisco, Humpback Whitefish, Pike, Broad Whitefish, Sheefish, Arctic Grayling, Arctic Lamprey, and Longnose Suckers.
